WHAT A GIRL WANTS Music Video, 1985 or 1986, X Star
A music video by a group named The Company She Keeps. The following information is courtesy of David Finney:
The WHAT A GIRL WANTS video was the joint-brainchild of a Music Promoter called STEVE FERNIE and myself (DAVID FINNEY).
We had the idea of a B&W/Sepia "Silent Movie" (with music!) in a traditional silent movie setting; i.e. girl tied to railway track, moustache-twirling Villain,
fast music (driven by our song which rattles away in a popabilly groove), daft Harold Lloyd gags etc.
ANYWAY, we had one particular part in the video that seemed very suited to RIK, so Steve called Rik's agent and said he might be interested but it's doubtful he will make the shoot as he has a friend's birthday party the night before...
BUT, he came and did the video with no rehearsal and produced a series of superb impromptu scenes in typical Rik-mode. He had us in stitches during filming and ended
up playing several parts, including a newspaper seller, a keystone cop as well as the big part of the Villain. (We were just so chuffed to have our then-comedy-hero-at-the-time on board our debut video).
In addition, the band (THE COMPANY SHE KEEPS) were quite poor and Rik agreed a half-now-other-half-when-it's-a-hit deal. I think he's still waiting...
However, the video was a success and was shown on BBC, MTV, C4 and several other local independents. Rik's presence did get us a lot of attention
and we ended up doing WACADAY (where we talked about the video with the Magpie chap) and then did a live take.
(It did amuse me recently to see the other version of WAGW in the charts recently named after the recent movie, but I believe we ripped off the store name first).
