Alan B'Stard Turns to Blair

ITV March 20, 2006

Rik Mayall is taking scheming politician Alan B'Stard from the popular TV series The New Statesman onto the stage.

The show, called The Blair B'stard Project, will be at theatres all over the country this summer.

Mayall has been promoting the show outside the Houses of Parliament in London.

In the TV series, which ran from 1987 to 1992, Alan B'Stard was a ruthless right-wing Tory MP.

In this latest twist, however, Mr B'Stard has changed sides to Tony Blair's Labour Party.

This is because, as Mayall says, "Blair's New Labour is far more right wing than the Conservatives were".

He also says being on stage gives them a freedom they would never be allowed on television.

Mayall said: "There is so much censorship on telly that the fact is, theatre is the home of freedom of speech."

As if to illustrate his point about the direction the country has taken, Mayall was asked to move on by police while he spoke to journalists on the grass outside the Palace of Westminster.

The play opens on April 19 at the Theatre Royal, Brighton.
