The flash is released manually -- just grab it and pop it up. Just above that "AS" label on the camera is the remote control sensor. Those metal things on the grip are called the grip sensor. This tells the camera that you're holding the camera, which turns on full-time autofocus assuming you've turned on this option. This feature helps preserve battery life, by not Konica minolta DiMAGE A1 focusing when you're not ready to shoot.
