CANON CANOSCAN 8400F TOOLBOX DRIVER
If you test the unit from the control panel, it will pass the test but if you try to call up Canoscan software from say Photoshop Canon CanoScan 8400F Toolbox Paperport, you will get error messages like "twain source not found" or "cannot communicate with scanner".
You can uninstall and reinstall the drivers to no effect. To fix this problem requires that you shorten the overall length of the environment variable by editing the user path environment variable, the Canon CanoScan 8400F Toolbox environment variable, or both so that the driver starts working. I don't know the exact magic numbers for maximum path length but I reduced my path from characters to to get my scanner working again.
I had this happen years ago on Vista 32 and just Canon CanoScan 8400F Toolbox on Windows 7 x Canon obviously has no interest in fixing this. In the end, this is a small problem and easily fixed, at least, once you know what is going on.

It's hard to believe that Canon's 64 bit Windows 7 drivers has this problem but it does. No entry in programs, nothing on the desktop.
When I then connected the scanner anyway, it briefly displayed an icon in the task bar, Canon CanoScan 8400F Toolbox immediately disappeared, but nothing further happens. Nor is there an entry in installed programs. So I thought I simply run the exe that I had running on the XP Pro machine; doing this from the full installation folder holding all of the CanoScan installed material.
Re-start the computer as requested. Download TWAIN driver file fvsta from Canon's website note I think the 64 in the file name might mean 64 bit, so you may need another for a 32 bit system. Locate the file, right click it to open properties, select compatibility and set this for Windows XP SP2.
If you want to scan slides or negatives that are larger - such as 6x9cm - then you'll need to look elsewhere. For most people the film limit will be fine.
But recently, it appears that the scanner's lamp is going bad. After an hour or more of scanning, the time required for the lamp to adjust Canon CanoScan 8400F Toolbox longer and longer. I am on the verge of replacing the scanner, but I wanted to rule out a driver issue, so I un-installed everything Canon from the system.
Not only did I do an un-install, but I ran "Registrar Registry Manager" and cleaned out every "Canoscan" entry from the registry. Then I rebooted the system, and began the process of re-installing the driver and software.
